The Schneider Electric Modicon M241 Logic Controller is designed to address this requirement. It brings processing performance, embedded motion capabilities and extensive communication into a compact controller suitable for demanding machine applications. Schneider Electric positions the M241 as a programmable logic controller for performance-intensive applications, supported by as many as five embedded communication ports.
The Modicon M241 is a compact programmable logic controller developed for machines that require more than basic logic control. It can manage high-speed inputs and outputs, simple motion functions, control loops and communication between different automation devices.
This makes it particularly relevant when a machine needs to coordinate sensors, actuators, drives, operator interfaces and other controllers without depending on a large or overly complex control platform.
The range includes controllers with 24 or 40 integrated digital inputs and outputs, along with different power supply, output and communication configurations. This gives machine builders the flexibility to select a controller based on the actual requirements of the machine rather than oversizing the system.
A controller may be compact, but it still needs to respond quickly when handling fast-moving equipment. The M241 supports high-speed counting and position-control functions for applications where timing and repeatability are important.
Depending on the selected model, the controller supports up to eight high-speed counter inputs with frequencies reaching 200 kHz. It also provides high-speed outputs for pulse train output, pulse-width modulation and frequency-generation functions.
In practical terms, these capabilities can help control operations such as:

• Conveyor positioning
• Cut-to-length machinery
• Filling and dispensing processes

The advantage is that straightforward motion requirements can be handled directly within the machine controller. This can reduce the need for separate control hardware in suitable applications and help create a more compact machine architecture.
Connectivity is one of the defining strengths of the Modicon M241. Every machine contains devices that need to exchange information, and those devices may not all use the same communication protocol.
Depending on the M241 reference selected, connectivity can include Ethernet, two serial communication links, a USB programming port and CANopen. Supported Ethernet communication includes technologies such as Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP, while selected models also provide CANopen master and SAE J1939 capabilities.
The two embedded serial links support commonly used standards such as RS-232 and RS-485. They can be used with Modbus ASCII/RTU and ASCII communication, making it easier to connect existing field devices as well as newer automation components.
This communication flexibility is useful for manufacturers that need to:

The Modicon M241 is programmed using EcoStruxure Machine Expert, Schneider Electric’s engineering software for machine automation. The platform provides an integrated environment for configuring controllers, communication, I/O and supported motion components. Schneider Electric also provides ready-to-use applications and function blocks to support machine development.
For engineering teams, this can help create a more consistent workflow across the machine lifecycle—from initial programming and commissioning to troubleshooting and future modifications.
Reusable function blocks are particularly valuable for machine builders producing different versions of the same equipment. Instead of rebuilding every application from the beginning, engineers can standardise commonly used machine functions and adapt them to each project.
Machine requirements often change after the initial design. A customer may request additional sensors, another machine station or extra safety and communication functions. A controller that cannot scale can quickly become a limitation.
The Modicon M241 supports Modicon TM3 expansion modules. Up to seven TM3 modules can be connected locally, while as many as fourteen can be supported with suitable bus expansion modules.
Expansion options can include digital I/O, analogue I/O, temperature measurement and other specialised functions. Selected M241 models can also accommodate cartridges without increasing the controller’s external dimensions. Available options include analogue I/O cartridges and application-specific cartridges for areas such as packaging and hoisting.
This modularity allows the control system to grow with the machine while helping preserve the original engineering approach.
The Modicon M241 is suitable for compact and modular machines that require a combination of logic control, communication and basic motion.

Packaging machines often need accurate sequencing, fast sensor response and coordination between conveyors, drives and operator interfaces. The M241 can bring these functions together within a compact platform.
Conveyors, sorting systems, indexing tables and transfer equipment benefit from high-speed counting, positioning and communication with motor-control devices.
Filling, dosing, mixing, labelling and secondary packaging machines require repeatable control and the ability to communicate with multiple field devices.
